CHANSHTNU MULDOON PARK LIGHTING IMPROVEMENTS
To make the park safe for all to enjoy even on dark winter evenings

Anchorage averages less than 6 hours of sunlight over the winter, so incorporating lighting into public spaces is crucial to encourage year-round use. The multi-colored lighting of the artwork by Vicki Scurri on the Muldoon-Glenn Hwy overpass is a great starting point. Let’s continue that theme through the Muldoon corridor in parks and along neighborhood trails.

The paved footpath from Muldoon Road through the park to the parking lot at Boston St near the dog park is poorly lit at night. Specifically, the areas under the pavilion and the trail over the footbridge extending east could benefit from more lighting to feel safer and more inviting.

Incorporate lighting histrorically displayed in the community. Install colorful lighted bollards to line the path through the park, especially from the footbridge to the end of the dog park

Activities To draw people to public spaces year-round and facilitate social interaction with neighbors
Giant jenga in the park as a potential activity for teens and young adults

If you ask young adults if they plan to stay in Northeast Anchorage, they often say there isn’t anything fun to do here. Boys and Girls club closed its doors in 2025, and for the somewhat older cohort there weren’t many places to hang out even before then. The Muldoon Library is great, but more activities in public spaces would help build a sense of community and make Northeast Anchorage a place people want to be.

We currently have sprawling parking lots that make walking through the heart of the neighborhood unpleasant and unsafe; as a pedestrian you feel like a fish out of water moving across expanses of vacant concrete painted with rectangles, interspersed with high speed multi-lane roads.

What if we converted some of those mostly unused parking lots into places for people?

Many restaurants in Northeast Anchorage have more parking than they need, but none currently offer outdoor dining.
