A pedestrian and bike bridge would make trail usage safer for elders and others concerned about getting run over by drivers while trying to cross Muldoon Rd at Debarr. It would also help kids get to Begich Middle School, Creekside Park Elementary School, Muldoon Elementary, and help NE Anchorage residents access groceries at Fred Myer and Walmart.
See ADN article related to pedestrians and cyclists being killed by drivers at alarming rates on state-maintained roads like Muldoon.

We could use placemaking as an opportunity to combine a Muldoon community sign with a pedestrian/cyclist overpass to reduce fatalities. The below mock-up would connect Chanshtnu Muldoon park to Creekside trail, in addition to helping people get to the southbound Muldoon bus stop and across Muldoon to access Fred Myer, Walmart, and other businesses.

First described in the 1979 Areawide Trails Plan, the Muldoon Perimeter Trail (AKA JBER Perimeter Trail) has been supported by state and local representatives and local community councils for decades, but has yet to be developed.
From the 2016 Muldoon Square Park Master Plan: “The Muldoon Perimeter Trail connecting Centennial Park with Scenic Foothills and points south along the JBER boundary was identified in the East Anchorage District Plan. …accommodations should be made to support access and connections between the park and a future trail.”
The East Anchorage JBER Perimeter Trail was listed as the #1 Priority for Scenic Foothills Capital Projects in 2023. Northeast and Scenic Foothills Community Councils both passed resolutions in support.

For more info including Northeast Community Council resolutions and representative’s letters in support of the trail, see Stu Grenier’s webpage about the Muldoon Perimeter Trail

Glenn Hwy Trail
Paved multi-use path from downtown Anchorage that goes out to Eagle River along the highway.

Bulldog Trail
Starting in Far North Bicentenial Park from the south and extending Northwest on JBER’s land East of the neighborhood, this trail could be connected to a future perimeter trail as an alternative to the straight, flat firebreak that would border the east margin of the neighborhood.

Valley Street Park Trail
Kids walking to Muldoon Elementary School from the nearby mobile home park walk through the narrow greenway on a dirt informal path. Paving a path would improve safety and encourage more kids to get to school by non-motorized means.
