Creekside trail is important for Northeast Anchorage because it connects our neighborhood to the main trail system via Russian Jack Springs Park. It also helps schoolchildren, seniors, and others get around without using a car and offers the opportunity to enjoy nature in the context of a mostly concrete landscape. This connection with nature is augmented by Chester Creek which is a culturally important salmon run. There are two markers in the area commemorating the tribal heritage of this creek.
PROPOSED LOCATION OF BIKE RACK 4
Creekside Trail at footbridge to Cook Inlet Housing.
This section of trail is used by a diverse range of pedestrians and cyclists including Cook Inlet Housing residents, kids going to school and nearby parks, dog walkers, runners, people visiting this particular spot to feed ducks and geese, and commuters connecting to the main Anchorage trails system to get the the U-Med district or downtown. It is located near many businesses and the Muldoon-Debarr transit hub, but offers a pleasant spot to enjoy nature while near the busy Muldoon corridor.

MULDOON WALL
Once a decorative border along Muldoon Road's sidewalks, the wall has crumbled into a state of disrepair with some sections missing entirely
crumbling Muldoon Road wall in Northeast Anchorage

The Muldoon wall was constructed in 2012 by the state. There was an agreement with the Municipality of Anchorage to maintain the wall for 10 years, but once that time passed, it fell into disrepair.

Read ADN article by David Weber, “What the crumbling Muldoon Road wall says about Anchorage’s infrastructure.” Also see letter to the editor “Muldoon Road Wall Danger” by Jan Wachsmuth.

The concrete blocks the Muldoon wall is made of are still available to purchase, but the caps were made from a mold that is no longer in the state, so it would be costly to have more made that match the original caps.

Should the Muldoon wall be repaired, or should it be demolished and the sidewalk widened to create a safer street for bikes and pedestrians separated from cars?

In 2018, the Northeast Community Council passed a resolution in support of the Municipality of Anchorage repairing and maintaining the wall.

ART FOR TRANSIT HUB
The planned Northeast Anchorage transit hub is a great opportunity to bring public art to the center of our community
Architecture • Sculpture • Mural • Functional Art

The Northeast Anchorage transit hub will be centrally located near the Muldoon & Debarr intersection, so it will be the face of our community. This structure could be an asset for placemaking if it combines aesthetically pleasing architecture, functional design, and art that represents our community.
